From the throaty exhaust note of the torquey 847cc engine to the aggressive, beady-eyed stare of the LED headlight, the 2020 Yamaha MT-09 is a tantalizing triple that is easily distinguishable on the road.
Originally named the FZ-09, its history begins in 2014 where it was one of the “first in a wave of naked bikes from the manufacturers that finally gained acceptance with the buying public in the USA.”
Since 2017, all MT-09’s have had fully adjustable suspension, traction control, dual-zone ABS, a slipper clutch, and LED highlights. As well, compared to many other naked sport bikes, the MT-09 features a double-sided rear swingarm. In 2019, the FZ was renamed as the MT-09 to align with Yamaha’s global market, and that is how it remains for 2020.
Powered by an exciting 847 cc three-cylinder engine, the popular naked sport roadster features fully adjustable suspension, three riding modes, traction control, slipper clutch, standard ABS and aggressive “twin eye” LED headlights. The MT-09’s liquid-cooled four-stroke, 847 cc inline three-cylinder fuel-injected engine features a downdraft intake and The engine has been tuned to provide plenty of low-to-mid-range torque with strong yet linear throttle response.
The MT-09 features an aggressively styled twin-eye headlight assembly that gives this best-selling naked sport a more menacing look. The slanting dual headlights are equipped with four LED bulbs, accompanied by dual LED positioning lights.
Summing it up: the Yamaha MT-09 is an interesting motorcycle as it toes the line between a naked sport and a streetfighter-style body and power. Using a crossplane inline 3 engine, it produces approximately 115 HP at the crank and has plenty of low RPM and mid-range grunt to get it going and to pull cleanly and confidently out of corners.
