With the introduction of the MT-03, the 2020 Yamaha MT-07 moves up a slot in the Masters of Torque hierarchy. Instead of being presented as an entry point in the MT family, it’s now a step-up model. Thanks to its friendly yet capable crossplane crankshaft twin-cylinder CP2 powerplant, the MT-07 is happy to cruise around town casually, while being ready to pounce in the canyons at a moment’s notice.
The 2020 model is still an extremely affordable naked bike that is right for those looking to bomb down the twisties at a spirited pace, and set more than a respectable speed for freeway or street riding with its torque-rich engine and lightweight steel frame.

The MT-07 was restyled in 2018 to more closely resemble its bigger MT siblings. The MT-07 features a refined style to match the rest of the MT family, including an angular headlight, aggressive intake scoops, a sleek fuel tank cover, and a layered tail design featuring a bright LED taillight. A strong, lightweight steel frame provides an optimized rigidity balance for nimble, agile handling. The engine is a stressed member of the compact chassis, resulting in a total wet weight of only 403 lb. The appeal of the MT-07 is its simple combination of a lightweight, fun, powerful engine and modern good looks. It’s no secret that the MT-series is targeting these aspects of the riding experience, and from this vantage point, it seems to be paying off.
The MT-07 features a 689cc liquid-cooled twin-cylinder engine that is light, slim, and thrilling to ride. This 270-degree crossplane crankshaft concept engine provides a unique power character, combining outstanding low- to mid-range torque with strong high- rpm pulling power. The ultra-reliable, liquid-cooled, 689 cc inline twin has been designed to provide deep torque in the most frequently used rpm range (3,000 to 6,500 rpm). A single balancer shaft keeps things silky smooth, while the 6-speed transmission with overdrive 6th gear reduces engine rpm at highway speeds.
Summing it up: the handling on the MT-07 is responsive, and it weighs in at just over 400 pounds with its 3.7-gallon tank filled. That works in its favor as both an urban and sporting motorcycle. Yamaha helps the MT-07 embrace its multi-purpose capabilities with suspension that suited toward a rider who wants comfort on city streets, as well as a bit of cush in the twisties.
